    This Alumni Talk is in the format of a panel discussion, featuring a group of fascinating writers and editors who will discuss successful pitching of freelance articles to publications. 

    Former Daily news writer Anna Clark, pictured above, has freelanced across the spectrum of high-profile national publications, with a book about the Flint water crisis coming out soon; Jen Conlin, Deputy editor for Michigan Alumnus magazine who is a former Michiganensian staff member; and Stuart Emmrich, the new Business section editor at New York Times, and previously the NYT Styles editor for seven years. Both Jen and Stuart have worked together as writer/editor and can talk about the give-and-take of that relationship. They both serve on our Board for Student Publications.

    BIOS:

    Anna Clark is a freelance journalist in Detroit. Her writing has appeared in ELLE MagazineThe New York TimesThe Washington PostPOLITICO, the Columbia Journalism ReviewNext City, and other publications. She has been a Fulbright fellow in Nairobi, Kenya, and a Knight-Wallace journalism fellow at the University of Michigan. Anna edited A Detroit Anthology, a Michigan Notable Book, and her book, The Poisoned City: Flint’s Water and the American Urban Tragedy, will be published in 2018 by Metropolitan Books, an imprint of Henry Holt. Anna graduated from the University of Michigan’s Residential College and from Warren Wilson College’s MFA Program for Writers. She cut her teeth as a GA and administration reporter for the Michigan Daily.
     
    Stuart Emmrich is currently the editor of the Sunday Business section of The New York Times, which he joined in 2002. Previously for the paper, he was the editor of the Escapes, Travel and Styles sections and a writer for the Culture department. Before coming to the Times, he held writing and editing positions at Time Magazine, SmartMoney, Manhattan Inc, The American Lawyer and Advertising Age. He graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in journalism. 
     
    Jennifer Conlin has covered stories from some 20 countries on five continents, mostly over the past 15 years for The New York Times. Following two decades of living abroad, in Brussels, Paris, London and Cairo, she moved to Michigan in 2009, where she wrote features on Detroit's revitalization efforts through the arts, business, and food scene. She is the founding editor of Creative Voice, a social media-based arts journalism source that produces and posts videos showcasing the arts and culture in Southeast, Michigan. Currently, Jennifer is deputy editor of Michigan Alumnus, the University of Michigan quarterly alumni publication.

We celebrate with a brief presentation, preceded by a reception with delicious food and refreshments.
