Creating a Legacy

One of the Daily’s brightest lights and sweetest souls, Tammy Jacobs Bell '73, died in July 2010 of cancer after fending it off ferociously for a lifetime. The Michigan Daily was always in her tremendous heart.

When Tammy was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in her sophomore year at the University of Michigan, it was difficult for her parents to afford to come to Ann Arbor to help Tammy through this crisis.

Now, years later, a fellow Daily alumna decided to create the Tammy Jacobs Bell Daily Emergency Assistance Fund in order to establish a lasting legacy. The fund is to provide a safety net to Michigan Daily student staff members who have expressed an urgent need for financial assistance in the case of an emergency. Drawing on the support we can provide for our students can make all the difference in a time of crisis. In her adult life a public defender, Tammy demonstrated this sentiment on a continuous basis.

Many of Tammy's classmates and fellow Daily editors have contributed to the fund, and we are happy to report that we have surpassed the $10,000 mark required to fully endow the fund. Students may now apply for financial assistance if they are facing a financial emergency.
